After painting with coffee, the children effortlessly created something like this! It came out so chic!

We started shapes this week and making pizza was a perfect activity because children know well about it and they love to pretend cooking in dramatic play. Preparations : - Brown pizza crust : Big circle brown construction paper - Tomato sauce : smaller white circle (to paint tomato sauce) - Tomato sauce mixture : red paint + Elmer's glue (this mixture was helpful to prevent messiness) - Pepperoni toppings : small circle shapes in red, orange or pink - Broccoli toppings : triangle shapes in green - Cheese toppings : narrow rectangle shapes in yellow The children painted "tomato sauce", put it on the crust, and added toppings they'd like! I loved how the children enjoyed each step and they were engaged in the process!
One sunny afternoon, the extended hour children decided to do something fun with paint. They just needed paint, hands, brushes and wild movements! Klimt was not a familiar artist to the children and to me. I chose him for this week project because I wanted to explored about his deep, vibrant colors and beautiful patterns on his paintings. I wanted the children to use variety of colors, textures, yet learn to put them together for this project. I showed several choices of Klimt's paintings to the children and these two pieces were selected. The Kiss by Gustav Klimt (1907~1908), Canvas, Gold leaf, Oil paint Beethoven Frieze by Gustav Klimt (1902), Gold, Graphite, Casein paint The project was a collage using face pictures, magazines, different textures of paper. O even cut the pieces from Klimt's painting copy and pasted it to blend the colors. This is O's interpretation of The Kiss. Do you feel the richness of Klimt's colors in O's work? C chose an excerpt from Klimt's Beethoven Frieze. She loved this picture because of the patterns of the dresses and the peaceful faces of the women. She put three pictures of hers and carefully chose the colors from the magazine. She didn't forget to give golden accent on the dress! Through this project, I took some time to look at Klimt's paintings and realized how he used elegant and gorgeous colors. The brush strokes were delicate and the face expressions of his models on the paintings were so realistic and elegant.
Today's art project was making a necklace because C requested last time that she wanted to make some jewelries like bracelets or necklaces. Look at these beautiful colors of the beads! We used the plain wooden beads and put it in the jars filled with the liquid water colors. The colors came out so soft and pastel. The next step was to decide the necklace design. Should we do the beads all around the string or just a few of them in front? C decided to go for the 2nd design. C laced it one by one and tried to make patterns. She repeated to herself, "purple - purple - blue,.." She was proud of her workmanship and decided to make another one for mommy. She said, "I want to add a point gem in the middle," and she started to do it on her own. She said, "My daddy's going to ask me where I bought it. He will be surprised if I tell him I made it!!" Sure he will! To celebrate Chinese New Year, I was thinking what could be a good craft for the young children. We made dragon many times and I couldn't think of any good art and craft ideas about the theme related to the year of dog, so I decided to make a Koi Fish Mobile. I gave the idea and 4 year old C was just being creative about it with the materials. Her fine motor was shining in this project. Supplies we used :
- Toilet paper rolls - Origami paper (cut in semi circle shapes) - Tissue paper in different colors - Googley eyes - Wire - Yarn - Branch |
