Becoming
This year’s art show is titled Becoming. To me, becoming invites us to look beyond the final result and pay attention to the journey that led there. The works in this exhibition are not only finished pieces of art, but also traces of the children’s learning, growth, exploration, and countless moments of discovery.
This is why we chose Becoming as the title of this year’s exhibition.
Each piece of artwork is a footprint—a trace of the children’s journey and the story of who they are becoming.
Gathering the children's artwork for this exhibition, I realized just how much they had created throughout the year. As I imagined different ways to display their work and tried to bring those ideas to life, May seemed to pass by in the blink of an eye.
Preparing for the art show feels a little like carefully wrapping a precious gift.
For the past many years, a guiding purpose has remained at the heart of our art shows.
It is, in some ways, an effort to challenge the assumption that children’s artwork is merely cute, simple, or immature.
Children may be young, but they have their own ways of making sense of the world.
Through paint, lines, textures, shapes, and marks, they communicate ideas that are uniquely their own.
I hope this exhibition offers not only an opportunity to appreciate the artwork itself, but also a chance to see the world through the eyes of the children who created it.
